Fungus Treatment

Dr. Youner uses the most POWERFUL, FDA APPROVED laser for the treatment of fungal toenails. Our laser, the Revolution by Astanza Q-switched Nd Yag laser, is thirty times more powerful and effective than previous lasers for the treatment of fungal finger and toenails.

Fees for laser nail treatment are $150 per infected nail, with a follow up visit in three months, for a fee of $150 per nail if needed. Two treatments are required for best results, along with topical use of Formula 3, a powerful yet safe antifungal medication.

Astanza Revolution has FDA approval for the treatment of onychomycosis (fungal nail infections) using its Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system.

Nails take up to a year for the fungal infection to grow out. Results are able to be noted by our doctors in six weeks.  The Q-switched NdYag 1064/532 laser is an FDA approved laser treatment that requires  one treatment for moderate nail fungus, and two to three treatments for more severe infections.

The nail treatment is painless, with only a warming sensation noted.

The treatment of toenail fungus has previously been very difficult due to the location of the fungus both underneath and inside of the nail. As many as 10% of Americans suffer from unsightly nails that prevent them from feeling comfortable with bare feet or toes in public.60% of Americans over the age of 60 have this infection as well.

Due to the location of the infection, topical creams are frequently ineffective for many patients and oral medications lead to health risks, liver enzyme testing, and are only effective in a small percentage of users. Many patients undertake years of ineffective treatment at great expense, all the while suffering in silence and hoping for something better to treat their yellowed, brittle, thickened toenails.

The side effects of toenail fungus include not only the appearance of the infected nails themselves, but the confidence and mental health of the patient. The desire to attend pool parties or share a hot tub with friends and family can be destroyed, and a self-consciousness when changing at the gym, getting into bed with their partner, and fear of exposure at the beach can all gnaw at the psyche of the patient and leave them constantly fearful of exposure.

Laser treatment of toenail fungus finally offers a clinical proven, FDA cleared solution to this burdensome condition. In a simple, generally one-time office procedures, patients can be liberated from their fears and enjoy clear toes.

The treatment involves very little discomfort as the pulses of energy delivered from the laser penetrate through the nail plate and kill the fungus in the nail bed.

Laser treatment has proven itself to be the safest and most efficacious (90% rate of clinical improvement) procedure for the treatment of fungal (onychomycotic) nails.

After treatment, a nail takes 10-12 months to grow a new, healthier nail. Our most effective protocol is treatment is three treatments per affected nail 6 weeks apart.

The cost of laser treatment is $150 per affected nail, with three treatments of the infected nails performed.   For the best results, we prefer the patient to use the topical FORMULA 3 medication (available at the office for $45) daily for 6 months. In cases of extremely severe, indurated infections, the doctors may discuss the oral medications like Lamisil.

Post-Laser Treatment for NAILS:

Please treat your shoes with Lysol spray or purchase a Steri-Shoe Sterilizer which kills fungal spores with UV light.

Please also wash all your sheets, sneakers and socks after your laser treatment to prevent reinfection.

Another option for fungal nails is oral medication. Most commonly we use Lamisil tablets, with the basic treatment protocol being a preliminary blood test. Once the doctor has determined your blood test is normal, it is a three month protocol of one pill a day. We prefer to add the topical medication of FORMULA 3 to our treatment plans when we prescribe oral medication for mycotic nails.
